9. WINDSOR - 011-44-870-400 8300
This location enables you to easily see Windsor Castle across the street, but is very very expensive. It would be a choice of either of these below or the airport locations of Holiday Inns. (The Amersham alternative is also quite a drive and inconvenient to Windsor attractions, but Amersham has a charm all its own).
Note: Jet lag is worse at the beginning of the trip, and the first day needs to be easy for the elderly, so I elected to stay at the Castle Hotel upon arrival so that I could leisurely browse across the street and see Windsor Castle. Windsor is also pretty much central between Heathrow and Gatwick. But coming back at the end, I would stay at the airport Holiday Inn most convenient because of the price and convenience, and the fact that I had already seen Windsor Castle. And you could as easily see Hampton Court and Runnymede from Heathrow Holiday Inn on the last day, were there time. But Gatwick is too far to squeeze in more, another hour drive from Windsor, Hampton, or Runnymede. So you would want to see them on the way to spend the last night in the Gatwick location. It is your choice.
